Privacy
Up The Town is a free Wrexham AFC fan site. We collect as little as we can, never sell your data and never ask you to sign up. This page explains what is collected, why, and what you can do about it.

Who we are
The data controller is Dan Sherratt, who runs Up The Town (https://upthetown.uk). Contact: dan@upthetown.uk. We're a small independent site and haven't appointed a data protection officer.
What we collect and why
Reading the site. Our server and host keep standard request logs (IP address, browser, page, time) to run and protect the site. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (security and keeping the site working).
Our own visit counter. When a page loads we record the page, the website you came from (its domain only), whether you're on a phone or a computer, and the day. It has no cookie, no IP address and no ID, so it can't identify you. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (knowing which stories people read).
Google Analytics. Only if you click "Yes, fine" on our cookie message (or accept analytics in Google's consent message). Until then it runs in Google's consent mode without analytics cookies. Lawful basis: consent.
Advertising (Google AdSense). Google and its partners show ads here. Where the law requires it, Google's consent message asks you first, and you can choose non-personalised ads. Lawful basis: consent for personalised ads and ad cookies. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Affiliate links. Some links to Amazon and other shops are affiliate links, labelled as such. If you buy something, the retailer tells us a sale happened. We never see who you are or what you bought. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (and the retailer's own consent on its site).
Comments. The name you choose, your comment and the time. To stop spam we keep a one-way hash made from your IP address and browser (never the address itself). Bad language is filtered, and we can hide comments. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (running a comment section and keeping it civil).
Predictions, polls, ratings and Pick your XI. Your answers, the random ID stored in your browser, and the name you choose for the leaderboard (use a nickname if you like), plus the same IP-and-browser hash to stop one device voting many times. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (running the games fairly).
Goal alerts. If you turn on push alerts, your browser gives us a subscription address and keys to send alerts to. We hold nothing else about you. Turn them off in your browser's site settings and the subscription stops working; we delete addresses that stop working. Lawful basis: consent.
Emails to us. If you write to us we keep the email to answer it. Lawful basis: legitimate interests.
Embedded club posts. Some stories include the club's own Instagram or X posts. Nothing loads from Instagram or X until you press "Load post". After that, Meta or X may set cookies and collect data under their own policies.
Videos. YouTube videos use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode and only load when you press play.
How long we keep it
- Server logs: as long as our host keeps them, normally a few weeks.
- Our visit counter: 14 months, then deleted.
- Comments: while the story is online, or until you ask us to remove them.
- Predictions, polls and ratings: for the season's leaderboards and match pages; we delete yours on request.
- Push subscriptions: until you turn alerts off or the address stops working.
- Emails: up to 2 years.
- Google Analytics: 2 months (Google's default retention). Advertising and affiliate cookies: as set by Google and the retailers.
Who else handles data
- Stablepoint: hosts the site, its database and server logs.
- Google: Analytics, AdSense and YouTube. Google may process data in the US under the UK–US data bridge and standard contractual clauses.
- Amazon and Awin: affiliate tracking on their sites.
- Meta (Instagram) and X: only for posts you choose to load.
- Your browser's push service (for example Google, Apple or Mozilla): delivers goal alerts.
Where data goes outside the UK, it's covered by the UK's adequacy regulations, the UK–US data bridge or standard contractual clauses. We never sell or rent personal data.
Cookies and similar storage
Strictly necessary storage is always on. Everything else waits for your choice. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser, or through Google's consent message where it appears.

Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to how we use it, take a copy to someone else, and withdraw consent at any time (that doesn't affect anything done before). Email dan@upthetown.uk and we'll reply within a month. Much of what we hold can't be linked to you, so we may need you to tell us your leaderboard name or comment to find it.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Children
The site is for a general audience and isn't aimed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has posted a comment with personal details, tell us and we'll remove it.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. Big changes will be noted on the homepage. More about the site: about Up The Town.
