Nickson's impact at Wrexham will take time, says Parkinson
Phil Parkinson says the new recruitment chief has settled in well, but the benefits of his arrival will show over a longer period.
The short version
Steve Nickson has joined Wrexham as recruitment chief from Newcastle United, where he spent 15 years. Phil Parkinson says he has settled in well, but the benefits of the appointment will take longer to show. Nickson started in the role in early September and reports to chief executive Michael Williamson.
Recruitment is the area Phil Parkinson has been most candid about, and the arrival of Steve Nickson is the club's answer to it. Nickson joins from Newcastle United, where he spent 15 years, first as Head of Youth Recruitment and from 2017 as Head of Recruitment. Before that he gave 12 years to Blackburn Rovers, ultimately as Head of Youth Recruitment. The 52-year-old's role is newly created, and he reports to chief executive Michael Williamson and the board.
Parkinson said the club had "fallen behind with the speed of our progress" on recruitment, both at home and more so abroad. Nickson brings knowledge of players and a ready-made network, but Parkinson was clear the payback will take longer to appear. Nickson only started in the role in early September, so it is early days.
Parkinson says Nickson has "settled in well" and that the club is enjoying working with him. The winter window is when his role will matter most, with new signings expected. Parkinson said the squad has more depth this year and that he is very confident in the group.
Wrexham are 17th of 24 in the Championship with 14 points from 12 games. The next game is at Sheffield United on Friday 30 October, kick-off 8pm at Bramall Lane.
